Brazil’s Ibovespa fell 0.2% to 167,101 on Thursday, giving up earlier gains and ending at a seven-month low as a wave of disappointing corporate results pressured sentiment. Banco do Brasil dropped 4.2% after second-quarter profit missed expectations, Sabesp slid 7% after net profit fell 11.2% from a year earlier, and CSN Mineração lost 5.2% after cash flow came in below market forecasts. Hapvida plunged 33.1% as its second-quarter report pointed to margin pressure and higher litigation costs. Some stocks moved higher despite the broader weakness: CSN rose 5.6% even after posting a net loss, as the result was less severe than expected and revenue increased 6%, while Rede D’Or gained 6.3% after reporting a 9.7% year-on-year rise in net profit. Vale fell 1.7% as iron ore prices declined, with weak profitability among Chinese steelmakers limiting expectations for a meaningful rebound in ore demand. Petrobras added 1.1% despite lower oil prices, with peace talks in the Middle East remaining deadlocked.
