Severe heatwaves and prolonged droughts have left many European riverbeds dry and sandy this summer, driving the Rhine, Danube and Po to record low levels. The decline is hitting some of the continent's main trade and agricultural routes, disrupting freight transportation, forcing nuclear power plants to shut reactors, and eroding agricultural productivity.
