Chuck Schumer escalated criticism of President Donald Trump’s Iran policy on Monday, calling the earlier U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding a failure after the two sides passed a 60-day window to secure a broader deal. Posting on X alongside a New York Times article, Schumer said the administration had delivered no progress toward Trump’s stated objectives and had instead left Americans facing gasoline prices above $4 a gallon. He described the agreement as "one of the greatest foreign policy fiascos in American history" and said, "Donald Trump has failed our troops and has failed our nation. We must end this war immediately with serious diplomacy so we can begin to rebuild from the damage he has wrought." Fuel costs remained a central pressure point. AAA data showed the national average gas price at $4.0636 a gallon on Monday, down slightly from $4.0656 on Sunday, while California stood at $5.5768. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said earlier that the national average had never been above $4 a gallon after August 12 in U.S. history. The criticism came as Trump rejected a ceasefire extension after the 60-day period expired Monday and Iranian officials reportedly warned Tehran could take a more offensive stance if talks failed. Tensions also extended to the Strait of Hormuz (a key oil shipping chokepoint), where Trump said the U.S. was in control, a claim denied by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, the Iranian government agency overseeing traffic through the waterway. The strait carried 20 million barrels of oil per day in 2025, and Iranian leaders have said compensation, the release of frozen assets, and sanctions relief are conditions for reopening it.
