U.S. semiconductor stocks broadly weakened on August 19 as investor disappointment over OpenAI's second-quarter results heightened concerns about AI companies' losses, capital spending and exposure to higher financing costs. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 2.12% on the New York Stock Exchange, but South Korea's SK Hynix ADR (American Depositary Receipt, a U.S.-traded representation of foreign shares) rose 0.35% to $156.16, or approximately 220,000 won. Broadcom plunged 4.57% to $362.48, Intel dropped 4.02% to $92.80, AMD fell 3.71% to $466.42, Nvidia declined 0.99% to $217.56 and Micron slipped 0.39% to $937.10. Marvell Technology bucked the sector trend with a 9.9% surge after announcing a collaboration with Google on custom AI semiconductors and granting Alphabet warrants to buy up to $12.2 billion of Marvell stock. Major technology stocks advanced, led by Tesla's 4.23% gain, while the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average also rose after the U.S. Treasury said it would at least double its liquidity-support buyback program for 10- to 30-year bonds.
