Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. said Nvidia GPUs purchased years ago remain fully utilized across its AI infrastructure, offering a counterpoint to concerns that rapid advances in artificial intelligence hardware quickly make older accelerators obsolete. Chief Financial Officer Toby Xu said an A100 bought in 2020 and a V100 purchased in 2018 were still running at full capacity. He added that Alibaba expects its AI assets to generate very positive and robust cash flow after a three-year payback period. The company did not disclose what share of its AI workloads uses the older chips, but said demand has supported both legacy and newer hardware. Investors are expected to watch other hyperscalers for similar disclosures, which could indicate that strong AI demand is extending the economic life of existing GPU fleets.
