Rhee Yi-ja, the new policy chief of the main opposition People Power Party, called on the government on the 21st to halt discussions about building housing in Seoul’s Yongsan Park. At her first floor leadership meeting at the National Assembly, Rhee said policy principles and environmental standards should not be changed for convenience and argued that any housing proposal must follow public debate and consensus on the park’s future value, soil remediation and environmental impact. She questioned whether building apartments there would resolve the Lee Jae-myung government’s real estate policy failures, saying housing markets stabilize when people are confident that sufficient supply will continue. Rhee proposed easing rules and improving project viability in central Seoul, including a bill that would allow floor area ratios to reach 1.3 times the legal cap for private redevelopment and rebuilding of aging complexes as well as public projects. She also criticized the government’s ambition to make the country an artificial intelligence powerhouse, calling for a special law supporting new nuclear reactors and for power generation and transmission capacity to be prepared before industrial and data-center expansion. She urged the government to reflect rising electricity demand in the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand. Rhee said her party would offer alternatives rather than simply oppose the government and would compete through competence and policy.
