Tokyo stocks showed sharply divergent reactions in morning trading on the 21st to announcements released after the previous session. Mitsubishi Electric fell ¥70 to ¥5,585 after agreeing to acquire all equity interests in U.S.-based PCI Energy Solutions for $1.4 billion, or approximately ¥220 billion. S.T. Corp rose ¥14 to ¥1,538 after announcing a buyback of up to 1.7 million shares, or 8.06% of outstanding shares, for as much as ¥2.6 billion, approximately $16.4 million. Lintec dropped ¥290 to ¥5,440 as investors focused on a large share offering by its biggest shareholder, Nippon Paper Industries, despite Lintec's own ¥30 billion buyback plan. SMS Co. gained after Oasis Management raised its stake from 20.31% to 21.34%, while Odakyu Electric Railway rose ¥36 to ¥1,762.5 after July 2026 passenger volume and transportation revenue exceeded year-earlier levels. FUNDINNO also advanced, while FRONTEO and Yappli declined. Other disclosures included corporate alliances, post-quantum cryptography testing, forecast revisions and acquisitions, with some companies reporting improved prospects and others projecting weaker earnings.
