Before U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran began on February 28, the waterway handled about a fifth of global oil and LNG (liquefied natural gas) supplies. As the conflict approaches six months, energy-flow disruptions continue because Iran retains enough missile and drone capability to impede oil tanker traffic. Tehran responded to the initial attacks with strikes on Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. bases. U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed thousands and displaced millions.
