The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City is reviewing honorary road names using Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, as the companies advance a combined 895 trillion won ($645 billion) semiconductor cluster in the Honam region. Samsung Electronics plans to invest 425 trillion won and SK hynix 470 trillion won to build four semiconductor fabs (chip-manufacturing plants) around the former Gwangju military airport site in Gwangsan-gu. The companies are also considering at least two additional fabs by 2040, bringing the potential total to at least six. The city will ask Gwangsan-gu to begin the designation process after its internal review; a public comment period of at least 14 days and an address information committee review will be required. The city expects the cluster to generate about 100 trillion won in annual semiconductor sales and roughly 20,000 direct jobs once fully operational, while a Jeonnam Research Institute report projected the creation of an advanced city of about 100,000 people and regional real economic growth of 2.84% to 3.16%, up from 1.75%.
