Iran’s parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee approved Article 3 of the Strategic Action Plan to Ensure the Security and Development of the Strait of Hormuz, Hassan Kashkavi said Sunday, August 24, Mehr News Agency reported. The provision would impose charges on vessels from countries authorized to transit the strait for maritime, environmental, emergency fuel, insurance, security and other services. Payments would be made in Iranian rials or another currency designated by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Kashkavi said the rights of countries bordering the Strait of Hormuz must be recognized, arguing that international laws and regulations protect freedom of navigation while also requiring respect for coastal states’ security and sovereignty and preventing violations of those rights.
