South Korea is preparing the final major component of its AI sovereignty strategy: a cybersecurity-specialized AI foundation model. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency are accepting applications until August 26, with SK Telecom, Naver Cloud, LG CNS and Bidraft expected to lead competing consortia. The selected consortium will receive 256 B200 GPUs across 32 nodes for 10 months, undergo an interim review after five months and be judged on technical capability, development experience, goals, marketability and broader impact. The project follows Dokpamo, which has narrowed its field to LG AI Research, SK Telecom and Upstage ahead of a final selection of two teams early next year, and ModuAI, where six consortia are competing for 512 B200 GPUs and a nationwide public AI service. The initiatives are intended to build domestic capacity as advanced AI systems become capable of autonomously finding vulnerabilities and carrying out cyberattacks. Separately, SK Telecom halted new 3G subscriptions on August 20, while South Korea had 335,849 3G lines in May, or 0.6% of all mobile connections.
