Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) will hold an exclusive Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 3, with the two-seat robotaxi (self-driving taxi) already in production at Giga Texas. The vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and is expected to begin with employee rides before joining Tesla’s Austin Robotaxi service days later, Reuters reported, citing The Information. Traders on Polymarket assign a 17% chance that Tesla will complete a genuine retail sale to a member of the public for $30,000 or less by Dec. 31, down from 33% in late April. The contract excludes employee sales, fleet deployments, prototypes, deposits and announced prices, and has attracted approximately $48,500 in trading volume. Elon Musk said in October 2024 that customers would be able to buy a Cybercab for below $30,000, with production in 2026 or before 2027, while acknowledging that he could be optimistic about timeframes. He repeated the retail-sale promise after the first Cybercab left the Giga Texas production line in February. Tesla’s second-quarter update omitted its earlier statement that Cybercab remained on schedule for volume production in 2026, and Musk has warned that the initial ramp will be "agonizingly slow." The vehicle is central to Tesla’s effort to reposition itself as an autonomy and robotics company, even as most of its revenue and profit still come from electric vehicles. A successful Sept. 3 launch would expand Tesla’s Robotaxi service beyond Model Ys, but would not fulfill Musk’s retail promise; he would still have four months to deliver a $30,000 Cybercab to a customer.
