Sporting director Deco first submitted the bid earlier in 2026, but Atlético rejected it because it had no suitable replacement for the 26-year-old Argentine forward. Atlético also filed formal complaints with FIFA and RFEF (the Spanish football federation) in early July, alleging improper contact between Barcelona and Álvarez. Álvarez has expressed a desire to play for what he considers a big team and has identified Barcelona as his preferred destination. Barcelona’s interest follows Robert Lewandowski’s departure, while the proposed fee would be significantly higher than the €75 million base fee Atlético paid Manchester City for Álvarez in 2024. The complaints could create regulatory consequences and strengthen Atlético’s negotiating position if improper contact is established.
