President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Aug. 26 temporarily increasing by 300,000 metric tons the quantity of lean beef trimmings that can be imported without an above-quota tariff. The White House said the measure aims to address U.S. beef prices that have "increased unreasonably" for consumers. The move comes as drought and wildfires have driven cattle supplies to a 75-year low and beef prices to record highs this year. The American Farm Bureau Federation, the nation’s top farm lobby, warned Trump that reducing tariffs would "undermine America’s ranchers." The proclamation also said livestock import restrictions on Mexico had been imposed to combat New World screwworm, while the U.S. began a phased reopening of some livestock ports along its southern border this week.
