Indonesia’s parliamentary financial committee endorsed Destry Damayanti as the next Bank Indonesia governor, with a wider legislative vote scheduled for September 1. Destry, 62, is currently the central bank’s interim governor and, if approved, would become the first woman to lead Bank Indonesia for a five-year term. She was the only candidate and has the backing of President Prabowo Subianto. Her nomination followed the surprise resignation of Governor Perry Warjiyo midway through his second term. Destry would take charge as investors assess central bank autonomy, equity market transparency and fiscal management amid Prabowo’s pursuit of 8% growth for Indonesia’s G20 economy. The committee also approved Aida S. Budiman as senior deputy governor and Solikin M Juhro as deputy governor.
