EY is committing $100 million in bonuses to encourage employees to develop critical thinking, judgment and other human skills needed in the AI era, The Wall Street Journal reported. David Grossman, founder and CEO of The Grossman Group and author of The Heart Work of Modern Leadership, says the initiative recognizes an important need but argues that money alone addresses a motivation gap rather than the permission and practice leaders need to use human-centered skills. Research from The Grossman Group and The Harris Poll found that nine of the 10 attributes distinguishing exceptional leaders are heart-centered behaviors, while only 30% of employees say they work for an exceptional leader. Grossman says uncertainty makes listening, gratitude, clear explanations and credible conversations about the future more important, while paying for authenticity could make empathy and gratitude seem transactional. He also points to gaps under merely good leaders: 16% of employees feel what matters to them is valued, 19% feel heard and 14% feel they are reaching their full potential.
