The first shipments of 300,000 metric tons of tariff-free beef that President Donald Trump says will be sold to U.S. consumers at a discount are set to enter the country Tuesday. The imports consist of lean beef trimmings, which processors blend with fatty domestic beef to produce ground beef such as 80/20 and 90/10 varieties. The volume represents about 2% of overall U.S. beef consumption. Trump has not identified the exporting countries, saying only that several countries are involved. Agricultural economists David Anderson of Texas A&M University and Glynn Tonsor of Kansas State University say the tariff relaxation is unlikely to produce meaningful retail price reductions, although it could modestly improve processor supply. The plan has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers, ranchers and industry groups as the U.S. cattle herd sits at a 75-year low. Food safety and labeling remain concerns, with imported beef able to be processed and graded at USDA-inspected facilities while still receiving U.S. processing or quality labels that do not establish its country of origin.
