Crypto recorded 50 major hacks in August, a 67% increase from July and the highest monthly total of 2026, but combined losses fell 49.5% month over month to approximately $136.3 million, according to blockchain security firm PeckShield data published Sept. 1. Average losses declined to roughly $2.7 million per incident from about $9 million in July. Tectonic, the largest lending protocol on Cronos, reportedly lost around $74 million, making it the fourth-largest crypto theft of 2026 so far. Cronos validators froze the network after the attacker moved only around $6 million to Ethereum, and the chain was later restored to a pre-attack state before block production resumed. PeckShield's 10 largest incidents represented approximately $123.34 million of August's losses. Other notable incidents included the $8.7 million Moonwell exploit, involving manipulated MAMO collateral and lending markets on Base, and the $7.9 million Coinsbuy incident involving wallets on Ethereum and TRON, with some funds routed through exchanges and toward Monero. August's incident count exceeded the 40 hacks recorded in each of April, May and June, as well as January's 16, February's 15 and March's 20. April remained the costliest month, with approximately $646.9 million lost, largely because the Drift and KelpDAO incidents accounted for around $577 million. The August data indicate that attacks were distributed across lending platforms, wallets, infrastructure and other crypto services, including oracle and collateral-price manipulation, compromised wallets, governance systems and hardware-wallet vulnerabilities.
