California lawmakers approved a series of measures during the 2026 legislative session addressing the continuing aftermath of the 2025 Los Angeles area fires, though a proposed compromise to shift some wildfire liability away from utilities failed Tuesday. The Eaton and Palisades fires destroyed more than 16,000 structures and killed 31 people. Two companion bills, AB 1642 and AB 1795, would establish scientific standards for smoke-damaged homes and require insurers to use those standards promptly during claims. The measures followed reports that homes affected by the Eaton fire contained lead at levels hundreds of times above what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers safe. Other bills would give homeowners more information before insurance nonrenewals, establish financing for home-hardening work, provide $25 million for grants, rebates or loans, and assess unpaid restitution from utility-caused fires. All approved measures now go to Gov. Gavin Newsom for consideration.
