Brendan Sorsby admitted gambling throughout his college career at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech, including at least 40 bets on Indiana football as a freshman in 2022 and more than 9,000 wagers costing over $90,000 across four years. He continued betting after joining Texas Tech through the transfer portal (college athlete transfer system), despite earning more money through NIL (college athlete compensation rights). The NCAA banned him for sports-betting violations, while a Wednesday ruling found Cincinnati would not be punished because his activity there was classified as a Level III violation. Sorsby’s account appears in Paramount+’s four-part documentary series The Program: Texas Tech, debuting Friday. A court order on June 8 cleared him to play in 2026, prompting celebrations among head coach Joey McGuire and most of the team, but a Big 12 lawsuit against Texas Tech was later deemed an obstacle too significant to overcome. The NFL rejected Sorsby’s request to enter its supplemental draft, barred him from joining as a free agent this season and encouraged him to prepare for possible entry into the 2027 NFL Draft.
