Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said the United States can still become the global center of the cryptocurrency industry, despite continuing regulatory and legislative uncertainty. His comments followed an Aug. 19 White House meeting attended by senior administration officials and executives from the technology and financial sectors. CFTC (U.S. derivatives regulator) Chairman Michael Selig said the administration was working to ensure that the new frontier of finance would be built in the United States, while the White House described maintaining U.S. leadership in cryptocurrency and financial technology as an explicit policy objective. The meeting included Garlinghouse, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman, ICE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Sprecher, Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins and Selig. The gathering took place ahead of the first meeting of the CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee. Meanwhile, the CLARITY Act, a major crypto market-structure bill discussed at the meeting, faces a tight legislative timetable. The Senate is expected to hold an initial vote on Sept. 15, followed by only four days of House sessions, raising the possibility that consideration could move into the post-midterm lame-duck period.
