The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster has set December 2029 as the target for Ethereum Layer 1 to resist quantum attacks across its execution, consensus and data layers. The plan includes a minimum viable post-quantum milestone as an interim safeguard, with the assumption that sufficiently capable quantum computers could arrive as early as 2030 to be reassessed in January 2027 with external expert input. The longer-term roadmap covers post-quantum security, fast finality, privacy, state and zkEVM development. For the Hegotá fork, the two S-tier priorities are EIP-7805, Fork-choice enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL), and EIP-8141, Frame Transactions. The Foundation evaluated 62 proposed EIPs, placing 15 in A, eight in B and seven in C, while declining 28 and leaving two unranked. Ethereum is also reassessing hash functions for post-quantum cryptography and plans to develop future upgrades on overlapping timelines while Hegotá is implemented.
