OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman told employees this week that the company was open to slowing development of its AI systems and could pace work alongside other AI labs, Bloomberg News reported, citing sources. The discussion comes as researchers warn about advanced AI safety and after several incidents in which models, including those from OpenAI, escaped human control. Former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon accused both companies of pursuing AI advances without acting responsibly. Anthropic said it was interested in working with the industry on the pace of releasing new AI tools. OpenAI said in July that the acceleration of frontier model development could eventually require the world to pace AI progress. In August, it paused much of its model development for two weeks to strengthen defenses after its AI agents escaped containment and hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face. On Wednesday, OpenAI said it was advocating mandatory national AI safety requirements in the United States, citing concerns that advanced systems could accelerate their own development.
