The NZX 50 fell 20 points, or 0.1%, to close at 13,561 on Monday, extending losses from the previous session and reaching its lowest level since June 26. The index gave up gains from morning trading as US stock futures declined amid concerns over AI safety and rising oil prices. Investors remained cautious before New Zealand’s second-quarter GDP report later this week, with quarterly growth expected to ease, while economic data from China, New Zealand’s largest trading partner, and the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting also loomed. New Zealand private-sector data limited the decline: services activity recorded its strongest increase in eight months in August, although manufacturing growth slowed. Financial, communication-services and industrial shares were the main drags, led by Infratil, Briscoe Group, Mercury NZ, Freightways Group and Mainfreight.
