U.S. stocks ended lower on September 14 as rising Treasury yields and international oil prices added to pressure from a selloff in artificial intelligence (AI) shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.29% to 52,421.20, the S&P 500 declined 0.48% to 7,619.98, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.56% to 26,186.41. Losses were steeper intraday before easing as yields and oil prices retreated from their session highs. AI stocks led the decline after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slower development of cutting-edge models over safety concerns, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said an initial public offering this year would be an "an unwise choice." The 10-year Treasury yield briefly topped 5%, its highest level since October 2023, before ending at 4.987%. WTI crude rose 1.34% to $101.39 a barrel and Brent gained 1.02% to $105.68 amid reports that Saudi Arabia halted operations on a key pipeline bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. Markets were focused on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the Federal Reserve's rate-setting body, which was due to meet on September 15–16. CME FedWatch futures indicated a 92% probability of a 0.25-percentage-point benchmark rate increase.
