Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, a book-style device priced from $1,999 in the United States and 3.29 million won in South Korea. The launch puts Apple in direct competition with Samsung Electronics, whose Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced $100 lower in the United States, but it also creates a supply-chain benefit for Samsung Display, which industry sources identify as the effective sole supplier of the foldable OLED panel. Counterpoint Research estimates Apple could account for about 29% of foldable-panel procurement this year, or roughly 8 million panels, implying about $2 billion in panel supply value at a reported $250 per panel. The supply-price and three-year exclusive-contract claims have not been officially confirmed. Research firms differ on market-size estimates, but both expect Apple to enter the foldable-phone market in second place during its first year. Analysts also expect Samsung Display’s earnings to improve sharply in the second half as OLED production for Apple ramps up, although projected annual operating profit remains below the division’s 2022 peak.
