Mirae Asset Global Investments’ TIGER U.S. S&P 500 exchange-traded fund recorded the largest retail net buying among all ETFs listed in South Korea during the second half of this year. Individual investors bought 1.4644 trillion won ($1.09 billion) over 52 trading sessions from July 1 through the previous day, according to the Korea Exchange on the 15th. The fund has attracted net retail buying for 103 consecutive trading sessions since April 15, with cumulative purchases reaching 3.0613 trillion won. The TIGER U.S. Nasdaq 100 ETF ranked fifth overall after drawing 682.1 billion won over the same period, bringing combined second-half inflows into the two Mirae Asset U.S. benchmark ETFs to 2.1465 trillion won. The buying continued even as the won strengthened against the dollar, with the won-dollar rate falling more than 13% from 1,549.4 won at the end of June to 1,347.3 won on the 14th of this month. Because unhedged funds typically suffer foreign-exchange losses when the won rises, the purchases indicate that investors are maintaining a longer-term focus on diversified exposure to U.S. stocks despite short-term currency volatility. Kim Sang-yul, head of the global ETF management division at Mirae Asset Global Investments, said the fund’s top ranking showed investors had selected a U.S. benchmark index with a long track record amid volatile markets. He said the company would use the S&P 500’s periodic rebalancing to reflect new growth industries and help investors capture U.S. economic growth.
