Suspicious transaction reports linked to virtual assets rose about 312-fold in South Korea over four years, reaching 62,055 in 2025 from 199 in 2021. The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), which reviews and analyzes potentially illicit financial activity, has 80 employees in total, with 43 assigned to suspicious transaction screening and analysis. The figures were cited by Dailian from a strategy and policy document on preventing money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing released by the FIU under South Korea’s Financial Services Commission on Sept. 16. The report said the FIU’s staffing and systems have not kept pace with the increase. Its total workforce is smaller than those of Australia, Germany and France, which have 600, 700 and 220 employees, respectively.
