Morgan Stanley Investment Management plans to convert eight municipal bond mutual funds holding nearly $10 billion into ETFs (exchange-traded funds), subject to shareholder approval. Seven funds would become newly created actively managed ETFs, while the eighth would be reorganized into the existing Eaton Vance Short Duration Municipal Income ETF (NYSE:EVSM). The proposed lineup would span national municipal bonds, California and New York markets, ultra-short and short-duration strategies, and high-yield municipal debt. Each strategy has at least 15 years of performance history. The conversions follow Morgan Stanley’s earlier fixed-income mutual-fund transactions, including the March 2024 conversion of Eaton Vance Total Return Bond ETF (NYSE:EVTR), whose assets grew from $363 million to more than $6 billion, according to the firm. Morgan Stanley said its ETF and ETP (exchange-traded product) platform, launched in 2023, has grown to more than $16 billion across 22 products.
