Futures tracking U.S. equities rose about 1% on Thursday, recovering losses from the previous two sessions as lower oil prices helped soften Treasury yields. Contracts for the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100%, and Dow were each around 1% higher. Oil and fuel prices pared their recent gains after Saudi Arabia signaled progress in restoring capacity through its East-West pipeline, easing part of the recent increase in wholesale energy inflation. Inflationary pressures had led the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates by 25 basis points the previous day, while FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) projections showed consensus for another increase this year. Chipmakers led the rebound, with Intel, AMD, Marvell, Seagate, and Lam Research each gaining 3% after concerns about AI safety had raised doubts about AI capital expenditure earlier in the week. Credit-sensitive banks and AI hyperscalers also advanced, while Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon rose nearly 2%.
