Taiwan's TAIEX (Taiwan's main stock-market benchmark) climbed 892.75 points, or 1.93%, to close at a session high of 47,180.75 on the 18th, reclaiming 47,000 as technology and semiconductor shares rebounded globally. The TPEx Index (Taiwan's over-the-counter stock index) rose 3.64% to 412.68. Main-board turnover reached NT$1.075065 trillion, about $33.8 billion, while combined turnover with the over-the-counter market exceeded NT$1.34 trillion, or about $42.1 billion. The rally followed gains in the Nasdaq Composite and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which rose 1.69% and 3.14%, respectively, as lower oil prices and Treasury yields reduced immediate inflation and interest-rate concerns. TSMC led the advance, while United Microelectronics, MediaTek, memory-chip makers and high-priced electronics stocks also rose sharply. Global Unichip locked limit-up at NT$7,150, and the TPEx surge indicated that buying extended beyond large-cap shares. Financial stocks generally weakened. Analysts said the durability of the U.S. technology rebound and whether trading activity remains elevated will be central to the rally's outlook; without continued foreign institutional buying, the TAIEX could consolidate around 47,000 as investors take profits.
