AssangeDAO (JUSTICE), an Ethereum token created to fund Julian Assange’s legal defense, rose 743% in 24 hours after WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returned to X with a two-word post saying he was back. Assange said his last personal post was in 2018, correcting widespread reports that he had been absent for two years. Trading turnover increased from less than $800 in average daily volume over the previous month to roughly $231,000 during the surge, although liquidity remained thin, with most activity concentrated in one Uniswap pool and the token’s fully diluted valuation near $2.5 million. JUSTICE remains about 95% below its February 2022 record. AssangeDAO launched in February 2022 after supporters pooled 16,593 ETH, worth about $53 million at the time, to buy an NFT from artist Pak; the Wau Holland Foundation later used the proceeds for legal costs. The token’s move follows a history of attention-driven crypto rallies that faded quickly, and appears tied to Assange’s history and visibility rather than a new project development. WikiLeaks began accepting Bitcoin in June 2011 after Visa, Mastercard and PayPal cut it off in December 2010. Assange later credited Bitcoin donations with keeping WikiLeaks funded and claimed returns close to 50,000%.
