Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said Donald Trump Jr.’s acceptance of a $250,000 gift from Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, a Kremlin-linked ally and president of the International Boxing Association, looks "really bad" and is wrong for someone with proximity to power. Cassidy told Margaret Brennan on CBS’s "Face the Nation" that Trump Jr., President Trump’s eldest son, should reassure Americans that Washington is not a swamp, even if he viewed the payment as a gift. Cassidy said Trump Jr. made the right move by repaying Kremlev, though he added that the arrangement should not have occurred. Kremlev helped fund a three-day after-wedding celebration for Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump in the Bahamas, including the rental of one of two private islands and a private fireworks show, according to a report by ProPublica. Cassidy became at least the third Republican senator to criticize the gifts. Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) called the arrangement corruption, while Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) described it as "beyond bad." Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said he needed more information. President Trump said his son had done nothing wrong and had repaid Kremlev, while Bettina Trump said the couple’s friend had hosted two nights of celebrations after their private family-only wedding.
