DeepSeek will be among the companies briefing the 15-member UN Security Council on artificial intelligence (AI) risks and international security in New York this week. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to participate, while diplomats expect senior representatives from Anthropic. Chinese firms including Moonshot were also invited, though DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng does not plan to attend and the arrangements remain subject to change. The meeting follows the council's first discussion of AI risks in 2023 and renewed debate over whether development of increasingly capable systems should slow. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that AI risks cannot be ignored, while US President Donald Trump has said existing safeguards are sufficient. Chinese state media have characterized calls for a slowdown as part of a Cold War strategy aimed at preserving Washington's technology lead and excluding Beijing from global AI governance. US and Chinese officials have also agreed to hold further talks on AI safety, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
