Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Mike Selig said the CFTC (U.S. derivatives regulator) is preparing for markets that operate 24-7 on-chain, with automated transactions facilitated by algorithms and agentic finance. Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, Selig described crypto and artificial intelligence regulation as an exciting area while saying existing rules must be reassessed. The CFTC and Securities and Exchange Commission have continued rulemaking after lawmakers blocked the long-awaited Clarity Act, which sought to divide oversight of digital assets among securities, commodities and stablecoins. The CFTC sent a proposal to the White House last week on crypto transactions and markets, while the SEC approved tokenized stock trading and proposed a framework for crypto asset offerings in August. Selig said the CFTC would help U.S. President Trump regulate digital assets, while White House Crypto and AI Tsar David Sacks called him instrumental to the President's crypto agenda. Trump has urged lawmakers to pass the Clarity Act, even as some lawmakers have raised conflict-of-interest concerns involving his family's digital asset ventures; the White House has denied wrongdoing.
