Financial companies will be required to disclose annually the balances of dormant financial assets and long-term non-transaction assets they hold, along with the amounts returned to consumers. The Financial Services Commission and Financial Supervisory Service announced the measures on the 28th after consulting the financial industry. Financial companies currently hold about 1.5 trillion Korean won in dormant assets, a level that has remained broadly stagnant despite inquiry services and consumer campaigns. The disclosures will cover banks, securities firms, insurance companies, savings banks and mutual financial institutions, with data posted on industry association and central organization websites by the end of March each year. Authorities also plan to revise industry model standards so firms set management targets covering refunds, balances, consumer campaigns and improvements to guidance and refund procedures.
