Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) criticized the President Donald Trump administration for moving to roll back former President Joe Biden-era fuel economy standards as U.S. gasoline prices remain near record highs amid the ongoing war with Iran. Newsom said the change would reduce the distance drivers get from each tank and accused the administration of benefiting Big Oil. The administration proposed relaxing the standards in December 2025, while Trump has repeatedly favored internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles over electric vehicles after ending the $7,500 Federal EV Credit in September last year. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. environmental regulator, also rescinded the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding, a legal prerequisite the agency had used to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions from new motor vehicles. Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), separately accused Trump of rolling back regulations and investigations involving fossil-fuel companies. AAA data showed Monday gasoline prices averaging $4.4768 per gallon nationally and $6.3650 in California, while diesel averaged $6.45311 nationally and $8.3999 in California. November West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 4.27% to $96.36, and November 2026 Brent futures gained 3.50% to $100.85. Oil ETFs also advanced in premarket trading.
