Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said President Trump should bring the Iran war to an end as the conflict reached seven months, citing soaring gasoline prices and pressure on Americans’ cost of living. Speaking to NewsNation Live host Connell McShane, Capito said Republican Senate candidates were seeking distance from Trump as support among GOP lawmakers weakened. She said the war had been presented as short-term and that its continuation had disappointed Americans. Capito also said the Strait of Hormuz was more open at Iran’s behest and that economic pressure appeared to be having the desired effect. Iran has effectively closed the route since Feb. 28; roughly 20% of the world’s oil exports pass through it. The U.S. national average for gasoline reached $4.48 on Monday, according to AAA. Iranian negotiators offered a seven-day plan last week to reopen the strait and begin a ceasefire, but Trump rejected it Saturday and said Sunday that U.S. officials would continue negotiations with Iran this week.
