OpenAI launched Dots, an always-on AI agent with a colorful, bubbly avatar, on Tuesday. The product’s name drew attention after dot.com, a domain controlled by Elon Musk’s xAI, began redirecting visitors to the download page for xAI’s Grok chatbot app. Whois records show the domain was transferred in July. xAI may have acquired it for conventional reasons, including capturing searches from people who mistype bot.com, but online observers have speculated that the purchase was a prank aimed at OpenAI. The domain bot.com is not owned by xAI, while vot.com is listed for sale. The domain dots.com, which more directly matches OpenAI’s product, belongs to a long-defunct company.
