South Korean stocks opened the fourth quarter strongly, with the Kospi rising 1.95% to 6,971.35 on Oct. 1 after four losing sessions and the Kosdaq jumping 4.48% to 894.29. JPMorgan said SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics have more room to recover toward their late-June peaks after lagging Micron Technology’s rebound. Micron’s record quarterly results and warning that memory and storage conditions will remain much tighter through fiscal 2028 strengthened expectations for a prolonged memory-chip upcycle. Cooling U.S. inflation, reduced concern over oil supplies and lower expectations for an additional Federal Reserve rate increase also supported the rebound. Semiconductor materials, parts and equipment stocks outperformed, with Hana Micron, Samwha Capacitor, Wonik Holdings and Daeduck Electronics gaining between 32% and 43% over the past month. Samsung Securities said investment expectations in the sector have been building for more than a year but maintained that further upside remains, while Goldman Sachs and Hana Securities kept their Samsung Electronics target prices unchanged despite lowering third-quarter profit forecasts because of currency headwinds.
