Toyota Motor Thailand and Honda Automobile (Thailand) have temporarily halted vehicle production at their Thai assembly plants after severe flooding disrupted roads, logistics routes and supplier deliveries. Honda suspended operations at its Prachin Buri and Ayutthaya plants from Oct 2 to 6, allowing affected employees to take leave and planning to resume normal production on Oct 7. The company said it would add overtime shifts to recover lost output and meet customer orders. Toyota halted production at its Samrong, Ban Pho and Gateway plants, as well as a facility operated by Toyota Auto Works, while it evaluates conditions with suppliers and prepares alternative transport routes. The disruption affected just-in-time production (components delivered shortly before use) as accumulated rainfall exceeded 320mm over three days. The Federation of Thai Industries said flooding from Sept 24 to 30 affected Bangkok and 14 other provinces, with about 40% of member businesses in affected areas reporting impacts. It estimated losses to the automotive supply chain and related industries at no less than 1.018 billion baht, or S$38.7 million. The group said vehicle production could normalize as drainage improves and conditions ease in key industrial and logistics areas.
