The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 0.2% to a record close of 36,458 on Monday, supported by gains in energy and technology shares. Oil-linked stocks led the move after crude prices rose on mounting uncertainty over a deal between the US and Iran to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route for crude. US President Donald Trump criticized Iran's demands for war compensation, while Tehran said Washington must lift its blockade before it would fully reopen the waterway. Canadian Natural rose 3.7%, Suncor advanced 4.3%, Imperial Oil added 3%, and Cenovus jumped 4.6%. Technology stocks also strengthened, tracking gains in US hyperscalers after brokers pointed to solid cloud demand. Shopify gained 2.2%, while Constellation Software rose 2.6% ahead of its earnings tomorrow. Mining shares were mixed, with Barrick falling 6.4% after disappointing second-quarter results and Franco-Nevada adding 0.8% ahead of its earnings tomorrow.
