President Donald Trump publicly warned FIFA against removing Gianni Infantino on Monday night, giving the embattled FIFA president his most prominent show of support as resistance builds among several member nations over a shelved plan to sell World Cup stakes to private equity (investment firms that buy assets). Infantino has not commented on Trump’s statement. Last week, FIFA apologized to members for "errors" in handling the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan and said its top leaders had reaffirmed their support for Infantino staying on as president. The organization said mistakes were made and that "the process should have been handled differently," even as several major soccer bodies, including UEFA (European soccer governing body), said they had lost confidence in his leadership. FIFA has since warned it will not tolerate attacks on its integrity, governance or due process and said it would take steps to protect its reputation, while also accusing critics in Europe of trying to "undermine" Infantino after U.K. newspaper reports about an alleged past relationship involving a female employee during his time as UEFA general secretary.
