Iran has raised fresh environmental concerns in the Strait of Hormuz after oil pollution was reported along the shores of Qeshm Island, linking the incident to broader questions over responsibility for damage in one of the world’s most important shipping corridors. Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said videos showed contamination at three coastal sites and across parts of the sea surface, with preliminary evidence pointing to a "foreign bulk carrier" as the source. He said repeated pollution events in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman have caused damage worth "trillions of dollars" to Iran’s coastal regions and argued that all parties benefiting from Hormuz shipping, including energy-consuming nations, insurers and military aggressors, share responsibility for remediation. The spill is threatening mangrove forests near Naqasheh on Qeshm Island’s southern coast, where authorities have begun monitoring and cleanup efforts, according to Iran International. The environmental fallout is unfolding alongside a worsening Hormuz standoff. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority said the waterway remained closed and "will not be reopened until Iran’s conditions are accepted," rejecting President Donald Trump's claim that the U.S. had total control. The IEA expects global oil supply to fall by 4.3 million barrels per day, or about 4%, this year as renewed Middle East hostilities disrupt production and shipping. Brent crude was last down 0.04% at $88.93 a barrel and WTI was 0.17% lower at $83.13.
