Senate Democrats are pressing the Government Accountability Office (GAO, Congress’s audit arm) to examine the Trump administration’s White House ballroom project after new reporting said the administration is expected to spend at least $900 million on White House construction. In a Wednesday letter to acting GAO Comptroller General Orice Williams Brown, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and seven other Democratic senators said the bulk of the costs would be paid with taxpayer money despite lacking Congressional approval. They asked GAO to review the project’s planning and approval process, cost transparency, national security issues and potential corruption tied to federal contracts for the ballroom. The request follows Washington Post reporting that the ballroom alone carries a $600 million price tag and would be funded through a mix of private donations and government money, despite Trump previously saying it would be entirely privately funded. It also comes after a federal appeals court panel last week temporarily halted the administration’s construction projects, then paused that order for two weeks to give Trump time to potentially seek Supreme Court review.
