India's BSE Sensex fell about 0.4%, or 281 points, to 77,450 on Tuesday, extending recent losses as investors assessed rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Market sentiment deteriorated after the US-Iran ceasefire expired without a new agreement, pushing Brent crude above $91 a barrel and raising concerns about inflation and higher import costs for India, one of the world's largest crude importers. Among individual stocks, Colgate-Palmolive India dropped around 3% after brokerages flagged margin pressure despite the company's growth strategy. Indo-MIM surged 10% on strong quarterly earnings, while Highway Infrastructure gained 4% after securing a government highway contract. Other notable decliners included BSE Ltd. down 2.4%, Cupid Limited off 1.7%, Billionbrains Garage Ventures lower by 2.7%, Bharti Airtel down 1.6% and One 97 Communications falling 1.4%.
