The Nikkei 225 index rose 890.37 points, or 1.36%, to close at 66,216.79 on Thursday, Aug. 20, according to Gate data. South Korea's KOSPI index climbed 381.41 points, or 5.89%, to 6,852.58. Samsung Electronics gained nearly 9%, and SK hynix rose more than 13%.
