The Sandbox said on Aug. 22 that it had confirmed and fully contained a recent SAND cross-chain bridge (network transfer mechanism) vulnerability involving Base and BNB Smart Chain (BSC). The incident affected less than 0.01% of SAND's total supply. SAND on Ethereum and Polygon was not affected, user wallets were not compromised, and holders and liquidity providers (users supplying tokens to trading pools) did not need to take action. The attacker used the vulnerability to mint SAND without collateral backing on Base and BSC. The Sandbox has shut down SAND cross-chain functionality on both networks, isolated their SAND and temporarily blocked transfers and redemptions. It warned users not to buy, sell or trade SAND on Base or BSC because liquidity there has been affected. The team completed a pre-incident snapshot and is preparing compensation for users of affected liquidity pools while continuing to investigate the scope of the vulnerability. A full incident report and technical review will follow.
