Iran warned nearby countries they could be treated as enemies and have their interests targeted if they join a United States campaign to cripple its economy. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, delivered the warning in a Saturday interview with state broadcaster IRIB. His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s pledge on Wednesday to launch the “most crushing economic operation” yet against Iran and impose “tremendous economic consequences” on countries providing Tehran “any type of lifeline.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced the message by saying, “You’re either with us or against us.” Rezaei said Iran’s response would begin with negotiations and efforts to separate neighboring countries from the United States, followed by a period for them to reconsider before Iran acted. The warning also extended to alternative oil-shipping routes out of the Gulf, as control of the Strait of Hormuz remains a central dispute. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the planned US measures as “extraterritorial sovereignty” over United Nations member states, while reports said Tehran had considered targeting US allies in Europe that support Trump’s operations.
