Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Sunday that Tehran is facing a “full-scale economic, military and security war” and is working to overcome domestic difficulties. In a televised speech carried by the state-run news agency IRNA, he said the government was “ashamed” of economic problems and accused US President Donald Trump of threatening the “most crushing” sanctions. Pezeshkian said Iran was standing firm amid an “unequal war,” arguing that predictions Iran would become Venezuela had failed and that the country had instead demonstrated resistance, solidarity and cohesion. Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding in June through Pakistani and Qatari mediation, ending hostilities that began in February, but negotiations toward a final agreement have stalled over implementation and navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas exports.
